In the early hours of April 15th, 2025, a banner reading “FREE PALESTINE” was hung off the Harlow Road bridge over the I-5 interstate. This was done in protest of the u.s. backing of the genocide in Gaza, timed on u.s. tax day in acknowledgement of u.s. taypayer’s role as the largest backer of the israeli military. The banner faced the southbound lanes of the traffic, the exact location where a year ago on this day, over 50 people blockaded the highway. That highway bloackade was part of a global day of action obstructing the flows of money and materials fueling the genocide in Gaza. The action was followed by a mass arrest of everyone on and next to the highway and nearly a year of court cases and trials. The banner that was hung today is a testament that repression will not stop the movement for a free Palestine. This banner was removed before the break of dawn. In this country, it isn’t enough for the state to enable genocide by supplying the money and weapons used to snuff out the dreams and lives of an entire ethnic group – they also want to erase all evidence of solidarity and resistance from its own people. On April 15th 2024, 127 officers were deployed to mass arrest 62 people protesting the genocide in Palestine, because they are terrified of what happens when the people realize their own power and rise up. But resistance can not be erased. We see through their shows of force, both in Eugene and in Gaza, as the desperation it is, and solidarity will win. from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
